My Reviews
Never really being a history buff, this is one of those books I never would have chosen to read on my own but so glad I did. It grabbed me from the beginning, got me out of my comfort zone and transported me to another time and place. The bonus was that I learned some things I had never known. I loved it.
If this book was not "required" reading, I probably wouldn't have gotten past the half-way point. I'm glad I did though, as the book did get a little more interesting. What struck me about the book is how little I had known about the life of Frank Lloyd Wright. Worth reading just to learn more about this highly imperfect visionary.
This book was so well-written, and such a pleasure to read that I didn't want it to end. Letters back and forth between story's main character and people on the island of Guernsey just after German occupation make up this delightful book. The letters became completely addictive to read.
I thought it could have been a really great book, considering the subject matter, but instead it read like so many random bits of information haphazardly compiled. I found myself skipping through pages of detailed listings of animals and plants in the zoo.
It's a bit heart-wrenching, but still uplifting. A terrific story. Loved every bit of it from the first page to the last. Enzo is my hero.
It moved a little slow, seemed a little pointless, but I definitely enjoyed the writing style. She is a beautiful writer, though some may say a bit self-indulgent. A lot of people in our book club thought the book was a waste of time.
