Sara Gruen does a beautiful job of pulling together the many important themes running through this unusual book--love, kindness, courage, old age, class arrogance, greed. Amazing animals share the spotlight with interesting human characters both on and off stage. The fact that many of the situations are based on well-researched circus lore makes the tale all the more satisfying.
