My Reviews
This story, which is woven through generations and time is complex and layered. It is tragic at times and inspiring at times. It is a story of friendships, hardships, love, betrayal, heartache. Everyone in our book club loved this book. I recommend it highly.
Very well-written. DeRosnay does an excellent job switching back and forth between two time periods while keeping the reader's interest. The subject matter was sad and even disturbing at times. It boggles my mind that anyone could treat a human being with such cruelty and disdain. I loved that part of this story was told from a child's perspective. Her insights were so moving and compelling. This book will stay with me forever. It moved me in so many ways it's hard to verbalize. It may be unpleasant to read how the Jews were treated but I think it's important that these stories be told and heard. This is a work of fiction but I have no doubt that all of these things happened to someone during that dark, dark time in human history.
The book was a little slow to start. The author alternates between a modern day murder mystery and a history based on Ann Eliza Young's life. It gets confusing at times, going back and forth. The modern day characters were interesting. The history was especially engaging. We had never head of Ann Eliza Young and the important role she played in getting polygamy outlawed so that was a nice bonus. Worth reading. A little bogged down at times but overall an interesting book that should spark conversation at bookclub meetings.
