I generally don't like to read books in dialect or patois, but in this case the characters' speech patterns were really essential to the narrative. I'm old enough to remember a lot of the things that went on at the time, but since we were living farther north the situation wasn't quite so drastic. I could still relate to the time and the voices. Writing from the different viewpoints was a brilliant device. I loved the book.
