It's difficult to find three words to add emphasis to a 5 star recommendation. Unbroken is not an easy read. Aware that every incident is not fiction, one dodges bullets, sharks and maniacs, hoping images will not invade sleep. I've been told the life of Louie Zamparini is to be made into a movie; if done like most recent realistic Hollywood films, I can't imagine him easily watching himself incarnated on film. His survival was truly against all odds and many who suffered the ordeals of WWII and POW camps had much different outcomes. The fact that he vowed to devote himself to God and eventually did, is an appreciated footbote in a book that inspires, leads us to realize what humans can be capable of, and yet underlines the inadequacy and vulnerability of most. Zamparini is a remarkable man. Laura Hillebrand has done another brilliant job (Seabiscuit) and her hard work in research, interviews and superb writing is greatly admired.
