My Reviews
In his second novel, Henkin introduces us to the Frankel family. Marilyn & David are the married parents of three adult daughters, trying to cope one year after the death of their son Leo while reporting in Iraq. Clarissa is married & trying to have a baby, Lily with her longtime boyfriend is not interested in a traditional relationship and Noelle is an Orthodox Jew living in Jerusalem with her husband & 4 sons. Taking place in the Berkshires over the 4th of July holiday, the family reunites for a memorial service to honor Leo, along with Leo's widow, Thisbe and son. This is quite a cast of characters and Henkin develops each character enough that you think about them long after the book is finished. The shadow that Leo's death has cast over each of their lives is palpable and you find yourself mourning not only the loss of Leo's life, but also the lives of his family that will never be the same. One would not characterize this book as a page-turner, but I could not put it down. It is beautifully written and the universality of the story makes it all the more moving.
