This book was just delicious in it's writing. I savored every sentence and reread a few over & over. While the subject matter is certainly difficult, I wanted to spend a day with Hazel Grace & Gus and talk more about the ghettoization of scrambled eggs (my favorite part of the book).
What a powerful and wonderful story! It is so easy to look at a description of this book and think it is just another book about cancer. The author has written his first book written in a female voice and he does it very well. He is able to touch us with his understanding of smart, witty and mature beyond their years teenagers who just happen to be living their lives with cancer. This book has made me look at how I approach people with cancer and concentrate on the person first, not the disease. I laughed, I cried and I have recommended it to all my book club members.
I think a book club could discuss this book for hours. However, it may hit too close to home for some members: the two main characters - teens - live with cancer. Hard to describe my emotions after finishing the book ... just ... I'm glad I read it and plan to recommend it to others.
Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.
Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.
Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.
Everyone in my book club loved this book. Although the book centers around teens with cancer, it is funny, sarcastic, intellectual and a bit of a tear-jerker. The characters are brilliantly developed and interesting. It is set in Indianapolis, a bonus for those of us who live there.
This is a kid-with-cancer novel. No surprise, we’re told this on the first page. But it is not the typical K-W-C novel. There is much to like– characters that behave as one would expect real teenagers facing a terminal illness to behave, dialogue that sounds real and a plot that takes us where we’d expect but in a fresh, new way. On the other hand, I thought the plot was predictable. Also, I really did not like the whole Dutch writer subplot and thought it detracted from the book. Kate Rudd does a superb job performing the audio book. I think I would have rated it only 3*** had I read it in text version. Her facility with the various voices and accents really brought the characters to life.
While I liked the book, I would not recommend it to any of my book clubs. Although I did buy it for my 17-year-old niece, who, I'm sure, will love it.
Anytime you are dealing with seriously ill children, it is going to be a diffiicult read. That being said I think the author did a good job of infusing humor and the joy of first love into a novel tackling a difficult topic.
Amazing read. I didn't want the book to end. Makes you laugh and cry at the same time. Fantastic.
An honest, authentic, intelligent story about teenagers being teenagers...who just so happen to also be living with cancer. Not your typical "cancer book"- Green somehow manages to infuse wit & comedy into every chapter without being disingenuous or cheesy. As an Indianapolis native, I also loved the hometown references!
Well-written, laugh out loud teen romance. Added perk: self-respecting adults can read this in public without wondering if they're too old for it (cough, twilight, cough). Characters well developed and able to express a wide array of emotions except Mr. Van Houten.
Grab your tissues, because you'll need them. This is such a quick, easy read, with well-developed characters and a very natural writing style. Good insight into the lives of teens with a terminal illness. This book gave me something to think about, and of course it made me cry!
Great book! Not expected, which makes it that much better.
Extremely insightful & inspiring book on being a teenager living with cancer.
This was the first YA novel my adult book club has ever discussed. 13 of the attendees loved the book saying they were surprised given the subject and that it is a YA novel. I would highly recommend this book for a YA group or an adult group.
... but I wouldn't buy it new. Get it used or from the library.
Beautifully written, two interested and courageous main characters. An interesting and inspiring way to look at living with a fatal disease.
Just because these kids have cancer somehow makes them wise or interesting?? Phooey! They are boring, self-centered, and whiny. Throughout this book you just want them to have a single moment of insight to redeem themselves. Alas, it never comes. Maybe if they read more than one book during there free time rather than obsessing on a single work of fiction they could achieve a bit of illusive adolescent wisdom. How do I get a refund on the time I wasted reading this book?
If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. Brilliantly written YA book that absolutely does not read like a YA book. Characters going through awful times that are so wonderfully, brilliantly written--you want to know these kids. Changes the landscape of terminal illness--showing that while dying, people are still living. Philosophical, funny, ironic, heart breaking and just a lovely, lovely book. Read it.
A beautifully written story of sadness, loss, and curiously, of hope.
A fabulous book that will make you cry a thousand tears. Have your tissues ready for this one!
Well written...characters with real conflicts, feelings, and solutions. Lightening quick dialogue. These characters will stay in your heart.
