I thought it was a great read. The movie was also quite nice.
An inside look at First Generation Female Chinese Immigrants and their American daughters. The book places their stories with their dreams and hardhips side by side.
The Joy Luck Club is a unique type of novel that allows the reader to see the same circumstances through many eyes. The narration is extraordinarily well written and the characters are multi-dimensional and realistic. Though the book is largely steeped in Chinese history and the Chinese-American experience, the characters and themes are significant for any culture.
I really enjoyed this book. I think Amy Tan writes about mother/daughter relationships so well. I loved the characters in this novel.
Great novel, but slightly difficult to keep characters straight.
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan was a very slow read and I had a very difficult time getting into the story. What was interesting to me was that the women were so rude to one another although there were glimpses of kindness. These women lived in difficult times, indured injustice and yet they didn't support one another with graciousness. Amy Tan reveals the Chinese culture and the difficult transition from China to America. This story begs the question "How well do you really know your mother?"
On the whole I liked the book because of the look into another culture. I found it difficult to keep the characters straight, but their individual stories were interesting; especially the ones that took place in China. Most of the book deals with people tragedies so it's not a cheerful book, but it does end on a happy note.
Good book however somewhat slow and difficult to keep up with character names. Good insight into Chinese American culture. We had good discussion about the book even though it was a little slow
