"Wiesel really makes you think and question" by raymonds (see profile) 09/04/06

We had a great discussion on this book. Could the holocaust happen today? It was easy to see how the Jews were lulled into a sense of optimism by the small steps taken by the Nazis to eventually put them in the death camps. Wiesel's story is amazing in a time where we don't think things like this could ever happen. It's hard to think that the holocaust only happened 60 years ago. The book is really hard to put down once you start.

"A must-read for every member of the human race" by dsouza (see profile) 04/20/07

Night is an elegantly written view of both human evil and human triumph. Though not an easy book to read, it is a necessary book to read. The only way to prevent the horror of future holocausts is to remember what happened during World War II in the Nazi death camps.

Some of our book club members had a difficult time reading the descriptions of evil that was handed out by the Nazi's. You find yourself unable to put the book down even though the events that are being recounted are horrific. As a book club reader, this is an easy book to draw discussion questions from. You can be sure that every member in your club who reads this book will have an opinion!

"great discussion" by dmc1230 (see profile) 08/03/07

I have read and discussed this book with 14 year olds and it always stimulates their young minds. Parts of it are brutal and painful but you can't help but be transformed by it. A classic.

"Generated interesting discussion about then and what is happening in the world now." by ksimpson (see profile) 09/10/07

Everyone appreciated reading this book. We had an excellent discussion. One of our members is the daughter-in-law of a family who experienced similar circumstances, but made very different choices with different outcomes. We also related this book to current world situations. It is an easy read and puts another face on this time in world history.

"A must read for anyone! Whether your a reader or not, this should be read by everyone." by yenner (see profile) 09/30/07

This book reveals humans at their basest element and it was a stark, horrifying, heart-wrenching account of the brutality and almost incomprehensible evil of man. It revealed, uncomfortably at times, the desparate need to survive and I think it is important this story be told and taught over and over again, so that our generation, and future generations don't ever forget the horror of the Holocaust.

I especially liked the new translation with the forward, and acceptance speech for the nobel peace prize.

"A personal experience of the holocaust" by kathaileen (see profile) 12/09/07

The author was taken as a teenager from his home in 1944 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He lost his whole family. I read it in one setting. I agree with Oprah that everyone should read this book so that the Holocaust is never forgotten. But also so that never again would the “world know and remain silent”. In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, the author also stated “Wherever men and woman are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe.”

"Packs a punch" by lrc2525 (see profile) 01/11/10

A short read that packs quite a punch. When we selected this book my first thought was that no way can anyone cover their experience during the Holocaust in such a short narrative. Wrong! Elie, along with his associate, does an incredible job capturing the reader from the start. If you don't choose this for a book club read, then do yourself a favor and read it anyway.

"A First Hand Account of Hell on Earth" by tompatrice (see profile) 11/13/10

We chose this book because it was on my daughters 9th grade reading list and it was the only book on the Freshman Honors list that I had not previously read. Now I understand why it's on the list. I think everyone should read this short (100 pages), profound, brave book. It is a first hand account of "living" hell, and proof that we must never forget...

"This caught my attention!" by lsancartier (see profile) 03/22/11

I underestimated the strength of such a little book.

"Informative Read" by leslien (see profile) 03/24/11

This books provides an inside look at the holocaust. It's not a long read, but gives a lot of insight as to what happened there. So scary to think of all the horrors that happened to a population of people within the last 100 years of our lives.

"Night" by mary2751 (see profile) 02/17/12

We found the horror incredibly disturbing.
