I found this book to be overly juvenile in nature compared to modern science fiction and fantasy geared towards young adults. Parts of the book were so abrupt that it was bothersome, other parts dragged. The book weaved between allegorical, religious fiction, and a child's story, should it have chosen one aspect, I believe the story would have been better, the reading smoother, and the book more meaningful.
I can see how this concept would have been very exciting in the early 60's but it's hard to compare it to Fantasy/Science Fiction written recently. Still a good read though, especially for kids.
I loved this book for the simplicity of it, although I felt it ended a little hastily. There was little discussion about what it means to love
A fabulous book -- classic science fiction. Meg Murry, her little brother Charles Wallace and friend Calvin travel through time & space to find & rescue Meg's father. They encounter extraterrestrial beings and the evil, powerful IT which must be overcome before they can all return home. Everyone in our book club loved this book!
We thought this book was well written and a good story. Not specifically Christian it deals with good and evil on a cosmic level. Has some interesting concepts on time.
our book club decided to read this book and I was excited because I had never read it Even when it wa one of my son's favorite books growing up . I realize in the time that it was written there were few girl heroines who were into math. My reads were really Nancy Drew, cherry ames, bobbsey twins, etc. I have to say I'm not a fan of this book. I do agree it was probably different for its time. but I didn't find anything alluring about the character Meg, and thought the ending very abrupt. Sorry.
Rereading a book I read as a child has been powerful. To be reminded by the heroine, Meg, that even though we have faults, we can change, grow and become enlightened to new ways. The ultimate reminder of this book- that Love overcomes darkness.
I started this book with two of my granddaughters while we were on vacation. The trip brought so much activity during the day that the evenings left us little time for reading. I picked it back up yesterday and started over. I'm now excited for my granddaughters to finish it as well.
A whimsical story of time travel to find their missing father finds Charles, Meg and a neighborhood boy, Calvin, crossing the boundaries of time with three spirits who have taken an earthly form, Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which.
I didn't realize when I started the story that it was the first of a 5-book series. My reason for reading it was that I heard Disney is making a movie based on the story. The descriptive details of the worlds the characters visit lends itself to transform to the screen beautifully. I so looking forward to this fun and entertaining story making an appearance on the large screen but, like always, encourage interested parties to always start with the written version first.
This story stresses the important bond that exists between family and friends and reaches out to the imagination in a child's mind that knows no boundaries. This is a story that can be enjoyed by the young and old alike and makes those of us in the "older set", remember why we enjoyed the Wizard of Oz in the days of our youth.
is a timeless classic, an inspirational novel of good vs evil. The first of a five book series by Madeleine L'Engle.
Hi everyone. I chose this book because the movie is coming out soon. Just finished reading it and it wasn’t my favorite. Don’t read it if you don’t want to. But come hang out at book club anyway.
I read this when I was younger and decided to reread in anticipation of the movie. I didn't remember much of the book from when I was younger. When I reread it, I realized that it was just because I didn't like the book that much. It's alright, but never captivated me.
