Jumps all around. Disconnected. Hard to follow. Could put down at any time and not pick back up. Nothing to keep me reading.
I could not stand this book! It received so much praise and accolades , I couldn't wait to read it. What a disappointment. For me, it was slow, boring confusing, depressing and completely annoying. I felt like I was reading pages & pages over& over again. I did not enjoy the premise or the book.
I joined a book club to encourage me to read more, I'm a slow reader and for years just didn't find it interesting. I've been in the club for 3 years and have changed my opinion - until this book. This is the kind of book that makes me not want to read books. Everyone keeps telling me it's "literary" - whatever that means. By no means am I a dumb person - but I just didn't see the point in this book.
Interesting premise, but the book was just too long--too many characters to keep track of and too many plots. If the book was shorter, it may have been a better read. Our Book Club did prepare many of the English dishes to try and we held a good discussion.
you could live your life over. Not like Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day. Ursula is born on February 11, 1910 but her umbilical cord is wrapped around her neck. So...
Ursula is born on February 11, 1910 during a snow storm. The doctor does manage to get to Hugh and Sylvie\\\\\\\'s house in time to save Ursula who is born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Ursula is born at least 11 times living to varying lengths of time and experiencing different deaths. She at times experiences a sense of deja vu. Questions are raised that may or may not be answered in a parallel life (universe). Unlike anything I\\\\\\\'ve ever read before.
I didn't like the style and the story was shallow.
A little confusing in the beginning. Once I got through the first couple of chapters I couldn\'t put it down. I even reread it months later and probably liked it even more.
2 loved it, a couple didn't like it all, a couple couldn't finish it. That being said, there was plenty of discussion with the book which makes for the best kind of books for book club.
Our book club had a lively discussion following the book's questions for readers. We also talked about how we all had to go back and forth reading the book so we keep track of when she changed her life to keep events straight, but we gained more of an insight on the character.
\"Puzzled me\", \"Confusing\", \"Exasperating, too long & too many characters\", \"Gave up trying to keep everything straight\" are some of the comments. But, overall, the book club found it interesting & a good book for discussion, especially regarding choices & the \"what if\'s\" in life.
This was a challenging book for the members to read and some of them were not sure that they liked it at the beginning of our meeting. But as the duscussion, which lasted for two hours and could have gone on longer, started, many changed their minds to really liking it and appreciating the questions about life that the author brings up through her main character's many lives. The book analysis led to many discussions about fate, life choices and their consequences, and the importance of being a "witness" to life and those around us.
I rarely give a negative review but this book was simply a journey in redundancy and confusion I really tried to like it but in the end the goal became just finishing it. No story plot and no real ending Don't waste your time
My book club had mix feelings about this book. It was too long and for the most part most members did not like it.
Our book club was very split on this book. We got about 30 minutes worth of discussion out of it and then moved onto other topics!
I liked this book, but some members of my book club found it difficult to read. It's the format of going back to her birth or another point in her life. At first, I was wondering why this was taking place, then it hit me, and it was easier to read. The part about her life in WWII was too long to me. If your book club likes easy reads or fluffly books, then this isn't for you, but if you like to read more in depth books, this is worth a try.
beautifully written, thought provoking novel whose main character lives through the worst of times, several times.
It reminded me of the movie "Ground Hog Day", where
you have the opportunity to do your life over until you get it right. In this book the protagonist had multiple "do overs" to the point of being tedious and pointless.
I thought this book made you reflect on the impact of choices made in ones life; however, I was disappointed with the ending. I felt that the author could have chosen to let the reader ponder how the world would have been if she had been successful in Germany.
You'll never figure out "what really happened" because this story operates on several different planes. But I think the author pulled it off very nicely. It's well-written and engrossing although several in our book club found it too confusing to be worth the effort.
Didn't think I would like this one based on descriptions. First let me say it is NOT ANYTHING LIKE Groundhog Day! It is a beautiful - if slightly metaphysical - analysis of life choices and how they affect - or don't - lives and other's lives. Love, yearnings, history, drama, thoughtfulness, characters, how pieces fit together with or without changes, animals, people, places, war and peace. It's all a part of the ride. Enjoy it.
It was difficult to follow, often frustrating. Many sections were beautifully written, painting a vivid picture.
At first I wasn't sure I would like this book, but it hooked me quickly. it made me think a lot of the seemingly small decisions we make in life or 'forks in the road' that open up new possibilities and life paths
Life After Life is has a unique and well executed plot structure. While it is slow to start, it definitely turns into a page turner about a third to halfway through. Once you get a handle on the concept and characters, you can’t put it down. It also made for one of the most lively discussions we've ever had in book club.
This is a book with an interesting twist. When lives are given the opportunity to rewind and redo, does it really matter? Can one life change history? Which are the lives that can actually change history?
This not an easy book to read and it is not short. However, if you can just keep reading (don't go back to try to keep track of the events), almost as if each section is a short story but with the same characters, it is an amazing book.
We had one of the liveliest discussions in a long time in our book club! Even the few people who found it difficult to read, thought it was very thought provoking. Highly recommended.
