This book was tough to put down. The violence was difficult if not unbearable to get through at times, but our club loved this book. It was well written and thoughtful from a womans point of view. I loved this book.
Although this book is tragic, it pulls you into the world of Pakastan women. It's an eye opener to how women are treated and shows the ravages of war. Through all the daekness and sadness it also shows the optimistic view of the human spirit. These two women survive a lot of tradigies and in the end find the one thing that matters most: Love.
This book keeps you guessing what is going to happen next. It opens your eyes to the way women are treated in other countries. It shows us how good we really have it. This book is amazing I highly recommend it.
This book was wonderful. It draws the reader in from the first page. Wonderfully written and a powerful story of life in Afghanistan for women of the different decades and areas. I loved "The Kite Runner" but enjoyed this book even more.
An insightful novel I read because of the Kite Runner. After finishing this book I've read other works about Afghanistan and Pakistan, finally stopping because it got to be depressing. I recommend this book to clubs as it will generate some interesting conversations/debates about cultures.
I wasn't expecting to like this book but I found I couldn't put it down. Brilliant writing and really makes you glad to live in North America.
As so many mothers do, Miriam silently endured and gave every bit of herself for the ones she loved. This moving story will stay with me for a long time.
I loved this book which featured the plight of women in Afghanistan that still exists today. The is novel really made me think about how lucky I am to live in America and how many choices we have here.
This book really makes me think about the many blessings I have being born in the United States!
Amazing!! A must read for American women. Required reading for this generation.
Rarely do I read a book twice, much less write a review. This book for some reason just captured me. I was engrossed in the characters and stunned by the treatment women receive in Afghanistan. Our book club read it and we had some really lively discussion. This is on my list as one of my favorites; I really enjoyed Kite Runner as well. The writing is beautiful.
Our club wasn't sure we wanted to read this book, but never judge a book by it's cover (cliche, but true). This is addictive interesting reading. Not only highlights the struggles of Afghanistan, but could happen anywhere!
It was easy to immediately get taken into this story. The story taught me alot of what life may have been like for women in Afganistan and they definately have my sympathy in this particular case. You really become involved in the events and I found it hard to put down at night (even when my eyes were half closed!)
This book was wonderful - it really takes a hold of you. There is so much to learn about the middle eastern culture, it was educational for me.
A beautifully written novel about women in Afghanistan.
We all learned so much from this book about another culture that we really should know more about. It was also written extremely well, engrossing and made for a great discussion.
This book was very sad and depressing. But, overall it was a good story and a great book!! i cant wait to read another one of his books.
Not only is it good writting, you actually learn something from reading this book.........
I couldn't get through it. Loved "Kite Runner", did not love this book at all.
In this book Khaled Hosseini does a great job transporting the reader into the lives of the Afghanistan culture. I was inspired to learn more about the time period this book covers.
Amazing story of women in Middle East and how very difficult their lives are. A wonderful story that will inspire you in many ways and help you to appreciate what you have, especially basic freedom.
One of the most powerful and inspiring books I've ever read. Loved both this book and "Kite Runner", but I think I felt more connected and moved by this one because it focused on female characters.
I couldn't put it down. A real page turner! I never cried so hard over characters in a book. You should read it. Brilliant author, who writes like a beautiful song on a perfect day.
As stated above I found the book very informative, inspiring, with a nice dramatic and romantic line to it.
Just finished this book last night...it was another one of those "can't put it down." It was very sad! The poor circumstances these women were thrown into was proof that life will take you where it wants to. As they were trying to make good choices, their good choices turned into really bad choices! I asked myself if I would have chosen differently? Probably not. Great read!
This was one of our best book club discussions to date. While the book was sad, it was also very informative and a real page turner.
