Introduction

(

Hennie Comfort is eighty-six and has lived in the mountains of Middle Swan, Colorado since before it was Colorado. Nit Spindle is just seventeen and newly married. She and her husband have just moved to the high country in search of work. It's 1936 and the depression has ravaged the country and Nit and her husband have suffered greatly. Hennie notices the young woman loitering near the old sign outside of her house that promises "Prayers For Sale". Hennie doesn't sell prayers, never has, but there's something about the young woman that she's drawn to. The harsh conditions of life that each have endured create an instant bond and an unlikely friendship is formed, one in which the deepest ofhardshipsare sharedand the darkest of secrets are confessed.
Sandra Dallas has created an unforgettable tale ofa friendship between two women, one with surprising twists and turns, and one that is ultimately a revelation of thefinest parts of the human spirit.

Ideas for Prayers for Sale book club meeting

I hosted this particular book discussion. Since the women in the book are often quilting I decided it would be fun for all of us to try to quilt too! I bought the supplies necessary and we each sat with our little fabric squares and hand quilted coasters. It was fun to try it and to chat about the book and stitch just as the characters in the book so often did! I also served raspberry pie as part of our menu as that was a recurring theme in the book as well.

This book gives you a glimpse of an interesting time in U.S. history. The relationships are beautiful and although it's very sad at times, it is generally a nice gentle read.

I found this book in the bargain bin and it ended up being worth a fortune. The book covers the life story of one Hennie Comfort and what a "comfort" she truly is to all those around her. It is filled... (read more)

This book was a wonderful story about a high altitude mining town and the friendships that bonds the women together, especially the friendship between an 86 year old woman and a 17 year old friend.

"Chick lit for the quilting set"by Donna C. (see profile) 12/23/10

A decent read, very easy, no thinking involved. A story of friendship, hope and life in the gold mines during The Depression. This is not prize winning literature but it is enjoyable and fun. This book... (read more)
