Chapter One

In the movies there was always a warning before something bad happened. Music swelled, the good guy promised everything would be fine now or the camera suddenly went into slow motion.
Life wasn't so tidy.
Izzy Titan sat in the window seat, as she had every day for the past month, staring out at a blurry world and feeling sorry for herself. While it wasn't a career choice everyone would make, it filled the day. She ignored her sisters' pleas that she join them for lunch or shopping or even come downstairs to dinner. Like a regular person. When it got too annoying, she pointed out she wasn't regular anymore-she was handicapped. If that didn't work, she slammed the door and locked it until they went away. She'd always given everything she had, but she was ready to become the self-pity queen, if necessary. ...

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

All Izzy ever wanted was her father's love. Over the years, she went from one dangerous job to the next in an effort to win Jed's approval. I wanted to explore how a daredevil would react when something terrible happens to her. At the start of Straight from the Hip, Izzy lives in fear because of the blindness caused by an explosion at the end of Lip Service. So not only does she have to deal with not being able to see, but she has to deal with the fact that she doesn't know herself as well as she thought. She isn't fearless, after all. She had just never been tested before.

Enter Nick Hollister, who has survived the darkness of fear, and who now helps people recover from trauma. He knows that showing sympathy for Izzy won't do her any good. What she needs is someone to remind her of who she is at her core and that a life without risks isn't worth living.

Izzy and Nick were fun characters. When they butt heads, they do it with a lot of biting wit, so readers should get some great laughs out of this emotional story.
