Introduction

Whose wife was she?

Macy Lockhart's life shattered in a moment with the news that her husband, Finn -- serving in the military overseas -- has been killed in the line of duty. Their ardent and devoted marriage is over, leaving Macy alone, empty, directionless. But while she tries to sustain herself with memories of Finn, the quiet, strong man who made her and their small Texas ranch the center of his life, it is wealthy Wyatt Clark who slowly brings joy back into her life. Her love for Wyatt may be less romantic than the breathless passion she'd once shared with Finn, but she vows to cherish him, and their marriage is happy and as solid as a rock. Until the day that Finn, miraculously spared from death, returns home to claim his bride....

How can a woman choose between the two men she loves? And how will she make the right choice -- for herself and everyone involved? In a deeply moving, passionate novel, New York Times bestselling author Julia London illuminates the questions hidden in a woman's heart.

Excerpt

Chapter One
The first time two U.S. Army Casualty Notification Officers came looking for Macy, it was to tell her that her husband Finn had died in Afghanistan.
Suicide bomber, the taller officer said. Nothing left but a half-burned dog tag.
Macy didn't remember much after that, except that she was getting groceries out of the car when they'd arrived, and the taller officer's eyes were the exact shade of the head of iceberg lettuce that had rolled away when she'd dropped the bag. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

1. Do you agree with Macy's approach to resolving her dilemma? Aside from Wyatt and Finn, which character(s) influence her decision?

2. Wyatt finds himself in nearly an impossible position when his wife's first husband “returns from the dead”. Do you think he reacts reasonably? Does he treat Macy fairly? Does he deal with Finn fairly? What aspects of his behavior toward Macy do you approve of or disapprove of?

3. Sam and Macy refer to each other as best friends. In a town where everyone seems to have an opinion (and no qualms about expressing it), is Sam forthcoming about her belief that Macy's treatment of Finn “had turned something sour inside Samantha”? (130) How are Sam's and Macy's ways of coping with grief similar? How are they different? Can you empathize with Sam's reaction to her friend's extraordinary dilemma?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

When our local paper ran the names and faces of all the young men and women from our area who had died in the war, I grieved for their parents and spouses. I wondered what it would be like if those families discovered there had been a mistake, that their fallen soldier wasn't dead after all, but very much alive. The more I thought about it, the more I pictured that homecoming. Nothing stays the same, so wouldn't the soldier find that life have moved on? What would he do if he found his wife had remarried? What would his wife, who had lost one love and discovered another, do?

These are the questions I raise in Summer of Two Wishes: How does a woman choose between two men she loves, and how will she make the right choice-for herself and everyone involved?

"Summer of... who cares? Spoilers here if you actually do."by Amanda R. (see profile) 03/19/10

I found this book to be boring and predictable. She's trying to make a decision between husband 1: the love of her life she thought was killed in combat overseas and husband 2: the guy who comforted her... (read more)

"Predictable and Bland"by Jennifer K. (see profile) 01/21/10

A fast, easy read that didn't provide enough "meat" for our group to have much of a discussion. Very few like-able characters paired with unclear motivations made for a not-so-enjoyable read.

  "Romantic dilemma"by Jill S. (see profile) 01/31/10

The crux of the book is a dilemma between her current love and a former love. The book was well written, the subject just made me uncomfortable. I wanted the main character to just choose and get on... (read more)
