Introduction

From the author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Small Great Things and My Sister's Keeper, a novel exploring the story of a young woman overcome by the demands of having a family.

Paige has only a few vivid memories of her mother, who abandoned her at five years old. Now, having left her father behind in Chicago for dreams of art school and marriage to an ambitious young doctor, she finds herself with a child of her own. But her mother's absence and shameful memories of her past force her to doubt whether she could ever be capable of bringing joy and meaning into the life of her child, gifts her own mother never gave.

Harvesting the Heart is written with astonishing clarity and evocative detail, convincing in its depiction of emotional pain, love, and vulnerability, and recalls the writing of Alice Hoffman and Kristin Hannah. Out of Paige's struggle to find wholeness, Jodi Picoult crafts an absorbing novel peopled by richly drawn characters, and explores motherhood with a power and depth only she is capable of.

“A brilliant, moving examination of motherhood, brimming with detail and emotion.” —Richmond Times-Dispatch

“Jodi Picoult explores the fragile ground of ambivalent motherhood in her lush second novel. This story belongs to… the lucky reader.” —The New York Times Book Review

We like using the book club discussion questions which we google on my IPAD. It helps to keep the discussion interesting and lively. Also helps us to focus on the book so we don't go off topic too much. We usually meet at a quaint little restaurant, a real ladies place so that members don't have the hassle of getting their homes ready for us. It's a nice night out!

"Harvesting the Heart"by Patricia G. (see profile) 04/19/13

As a group we felt the book had very little substance. We did not connect with any of the characters and a lot of the things happening in the book did not make sense to us.

People can be so blind in managing their lives and relationships. Every character has managed to make make poor judgment calls, and they stubbornly refuse to trust each other with truth about the past... (read more)

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors. However, Harvesting the Heart was in one word disappointing.

"Not the best of Jodi Picoult"by Jennifer G. (see profile) 09/22/10

Jodi Picoult is a great writer and I usually really enjoy her books. However Harvesting the Heart, was not one of them. You end up waiting until the very last chapter for some happiness, and once it starts,... (read more)

Beautifully written, dramatically hopeful.

"Story about a man and woman who get married but don't really know each other and their pasts come into play when they have a child."by Mindy A. (see profile) 01/08/08

I didn't not really like this book but it was great for discussion especially with a group of mothers.
