Introduction

(This is an anthology of first-person accounts of rural life in Edwardian Britain. Recollections from writers such as Alison Uttley, W.H. Hudson, Flora Thompson, Richard Jeffries and Edward Thomas. There are also accounts from people alive today - Hannah Hauxwell, Lord Denning, Dame Barbara Cartland, A.L. Rowse and Viscount Tonypandy - including ordinary folk, who evoke village life, schooldays, the natural world and other themes of county living. Illustrated with paintings from Edith Holden's "Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady", and Edwardian watercolours and photographs, it is a nostalgic celebration of the golden years of country life up to World War I.
