Introduction

What kind of assassin works pro bono?

It's hard to be a badass assassin when a giant is beating the crap out of you. Luckily, I never let pride get in the way of my work. My current mission is personal: annihilate Mab Monroe, the Fire elemental who murdered my family. Which means protecting my identity, even if I have to conceal my powerful Stone and Ice magic when I need it most. To the public, I'm Gin Blanco, owner of Ashland's best barbecue joint. To my friends, I'm the Spider, retired assassin. I still do favors on the side. Like ridding a vampire friend of her oversized stalker--Mab's right-hand goon who almost got me dead with his massive fists. At least irresistible Owen Grayson is on my side. The man knows too much about me, but I'll take my chances. Then there's Detective Bria Coolidge, one of Ashland's finest. Until recently, I thought my baby sister was dead. She probably thinks the same about me. Little does she know, I'm a cold-blooded killer . . . who is about to save her life.

Chapter One
The bastards never even would have gotten close to me if I hadn’t had the flu.
Coughing, sneezing, aching, wheezing. That was me. Gin Blanco. Restaurant owner. Stone and Ice elemental. Former assassin. And all-around badass. Laid low by a microbe.
It had started as a small, ominous tickle in my throat three days ago. And now, well, it wasn’t pretty. Watery eyes. Pale face. And a nose so red and bright even Rudolph would have been jealous. Ugh. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

From the Publisher:

Question 1: Do some people (like murderers, rapists, stalkers, etc.) deserve to die?

Question 2: Does being an assassin and killing someone for money automatically make you a bad person?

Question 3: Is there ever a need for assassins? Can assassins sometimes serve the greater good?

Question 4: Would you ever hire an assassin to avenge a loved one who was murdered? Why or why not?

Question 5: Can an assassin ever be considered a hero? Are there any circumstances where that might be the case?

Question 6: Assassins are popular characters, particularly in the fantasy genre. Why do you think that is?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

Dear Reader,

Ever since I started reading fantasy books, I've been intrigued by assassin characters and the moral questions they raise. Do some people deserve to die? Does killing someone for money automatically make you a bad person? Does an assassin ever feel guilty about killing? Can assassins ever serve the greater good? These are some ideas I wanted to explore, so I created my own assassin—Gin Blanco, also known as the Spider.

Assassins might not be the most sympathetic characters or the easiest to identify with, but I think they are some of the most fascinating. Gin certainly has her own quirks, powers, problems, and troubled past. Plus, I wanted to write a really strong female character, someone who can rise to any challenge or problem that she’s faced with.

I hope you’ll check out Gin’s adventures in my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. VENOM, the third book, will be released Sept. 28. The first two books in the series—SPIDER’S BITE and WEB OF LIES—are available now.
