Introduction
When librarian Kathleen Paulson moved to Mayville Heights, Minnesota, she had no idea that two strays would nuzzle their way into her life. Owen is a tabby with a catnip addiction and Hercules is a stocky tuxedo cat who shares Kathleen's fondness for Barry Manilow. But beyond all the fur and purrs, there's something more to these felines.
When murder interrupts Mayville's Music Festival, Kathleen finds herself the prime suspect. More stunning is her realization that Owen and Hercules are magical-and she's relying on their skills to solve a purr-fect murder.

Chapter 1Slant Flying
The body was smack in the middle of my freshly scrubbed kitchen floor. Fred the Funky Chicken, minus his head.
“Owen!” I said, sharply.
Nothing.
“Owen, you little fur ball, I know you did this. Where are you?”
There was a muffled “meow” from the back door. I leaned around the cupboards. Owen was sprawled on his back in front of the screen door, a neon yellow feather sticking out of his mouth. He rolled over onto his side and looked at me with the same goofy expression I used to get from stoned students coming into the BU library. ... view entire excerpt...
Discussion Questions
From the publisher:1. Kathleen is an organized, methodical person who likes to plan for everything. Her decision to move to Mayville Heights is impulsive and out of character. If you were Kathleen’s friend, what would you have said to her when she told you about her decision? Have you ever done anything that seemed out of character for you?
2. After Kathleen discovers the cats’ magical abilities she decides to keep what she’s learned to herself. Do you agree with her choice? Should she have shared the information at least with Roma?
3. Rebecca and Violet have been friends since they were girls. They are intensely loyal to each other. Kathleen calls them “sisters of the heart.” What do you think cemented their bond?
4. Roma feels very strongly that the Wisteria Hill feral cats should be able to live out their lives at the old estate. Do you agree? Should the cats have been put up for adoption instead?
5. It bugs Kathleen that Detective Gordon doesn’t have a library card. Reading is important to her. Do you think she’s being judgmental? How important have books been to you?
6. Several of the characters in the book like to cook. Which recipe would you most like to try?
Notes From the Author to the Bookclub
Note from author Sophie Kelly: Dear Reader: Do you believe in magic? Many people would say no, and yet they still cross their fingers for luck and make a wish when they blow out the candles on a birthday cake. We may not believe in magic, but we like to believe it could exist. What if it did? What would you do if magic touched your life? Kathleen Paulson is a practical person, not the type of woman to believe in magic. She has two cats—Owen, a gray and white tabby, and Hercules, a tuxedo cat. The magic begins when the two tiny kittens follow her, after she discovers them at Wisteria Hill, an abandoned estate just outside the small town of Mayville Heights, Minnesota. Kathleen has just arrived from Boston, to supervise the renovation of the town’s library in time for the building’s centennial. Thanks to the cats, she makes friends, and instead of coming home to an empty house, she has two furry companions waiting for her. But that’s not all Owen and Hercules bring into Kathleen’s life. Soon she’s tied up in the murder of a world-famous conductor and it seems as though Owen and Hercules are trying to help her. The boys have some unique abilities. Magical abilities. Kathleen quickly realizes this is not the kind of thing she can share with anyone. At the same time that she’s trying to uncover the conductor’s secret past, she’s struggling to keep her own secrets. What happens? I hope you’ll read Curiosity Thrilled the Cat to find out. Sofie KellyBook Club Recommendations
