Introduction

Holly Fisher opens her door one day and finds her estranged sister Hannah standing there with a glassy look and her nine-month old baby on her hip.  Before Holly knows what is happening, Hannah has left her baby with Holly and disappeared.  Three months later, fresh out of rehab for addiction to painkillers, Hannah shows up sober, contrite, and wanting her son back.  But Holly is in love with the baby and not willing to give him up to the mother who abandoned him.

Into the middle of this extraordinary conflict between two sisters walks a lonesome cowboy, Wyatt Clark (Summer of Two Wishes) who knows a thing or two about childcare and fractured families.   He's had his own troubles and has stayed away from women the last couple of years, but he can?t resist Holly and the baby.  But when Holly is delivered a devastating blow and returns the baby to his mother, Holly is too distraught to continue her relationship with Wyatt.  It will take an extraordinary turn from Hannah to bring Holly and Wyatt together so that they both may find the happiness that has eluded them.

Excerpt

Chapter One

The cowboy rose at dawn’s first light and pulled on a pair of worn, dirty denims. “Come,” he said to his dog and, scratching his bare abdomen, which had been made lean and hard by the work he did around the ranch, he padded down the hall of the nondescript red brick ranch house and into the kitchen. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

From the author:

Hannah’s addiction issues have spiraled beyond her control. When she recognizes it, she makes a very hard decision to put herself into treatment, but in order to do so, she has to leave her baby behind. Did she do the right thing in leaving Mason with Holly to seek help?
Holly becomes very attached to Mason and has a hard time letting him go when his mother comes back for him and does not give him up readily. Do you think Holly had reason to keep Mason? Should she have been suspicious of Hannah’s sobriety, or should she have realized that Mason was Hannah’s son and taken Hannah’s word?
Wyatt Clark has cocooned himself from the world after losing his wife to her first husband. Jesse Wheeler thinks it is time for Wyatt to re-join life, but Wyatt is reluctant. Was Wyatt afraid of being hurt again, or was he being unduly recalcitrant?
What made Wyatt fall in love with Holly? What was it about her that was different from the other people who had tried to rally him after the soul-crushing loss of his wife?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

Note from author Julia London:

Hannah has always done everything right: getting married, having a baby, and caring for her dying mother, all while performing impeccably in a high-level job. Her sister Holly is the college dropout, the one who works at a coffee shop and wants to be a songwriter. One day, Hannah suddenly—without explanation—leaves her baby with Holly and disappears. While Holly struggles with the sudden upheaval, Wyatt Clark (Summer of Two Wishes), a mysterious cowboy who knows a lot about life-changing events, wanders into her life.

As a writer, I am fascinated how ordinary people are sometimes thrust into extraordinary circumstances that forever alter their lives. So many people have suffered the end of a marriage or dysfunction in the family, but Holly and Wyatt had really difficult situations. I wrote this book for everyone who believes that no matter how dark the journey becomes, there is always a light at the end.

  "A LIGHT AT WINTER'S END"by Caroline C. (see profile) 06/01/11

This is the first contemporary by Julia Londond that I've read, although I am a big fan of her English-set historical novels. The writing was very good, but not as good as her historicals. Still, I recommend... (read more)
