Introduction
In Mescota County, Michigan, an angelic visitor's words inspire Judith to a future she never imagined.
After a barn raising accident, Judith Fischer's convinced she's met an angel. However, her attempts to convince others end up frustrating her Old-Order Amish community. Only Andrew Lapp believes her, but the rest, including Levi Plank, the man's she's waited to marry, demand she forget the nonsense. Meanwhile, her younger sister Martha has taken a fancy to Levi and sees her sister's controversy as a perfect distraction for turning Levi's head.
In a dream, the angel tells Judith she must choose her path. As her faith continues to grow, so do her feelings for Andrew. Will she continue to place her hope in the angel's message, even if it means losing all she knows and loves?
Excerpt
The maple tree’s crimson canopy offered shade for thechildren in Judith Fischer’s charge, and a perfect place to
stitch her quilt while viewing Levi Plank as he worked
with the men building the barn. With the structure nearly complete,
soon the supper bell would ring. Judith glanced toward
the house. Her friend Deborah was busy preparing the outdoor
tables for the meal. Judith enjoyed helping with the food preparations,
but she loved sitting with the children and entertaining
them with stories more.
Six-year-old Rebecca pulled on her sister’s sleeve. “Tell us
another story.”
Judith turned back and eyed the tight circle of smiling children.
“What color dress will the maydel wear?”
“Yellow,” said Rebecca.

Discussion Questions
From the publisher:1. How do Judith and Martha react differently to their brother’s accident? Was there a time when you lashed out at a close friend or relative? Did you recognize your action immediately?
2. Have you experienced a time when you’ve taken a stand on something, only to feel as though you were standing alone? Maybe a friend took a stand and you were able to offer support or help?
3. Even though Judith believed she was following God’s direction, how did she behave when she thought God was silent? What does the scripture John 14:18 mean to you?
4. Although Judith wasn’t always aware of Andrew’s support, he still held her up. What are ways we can hold each other up during a time of need? Can you think of others outside your circle of friends and family that you could help?
5. In John 16:33 what does Jesus tell us we can have? How is this possible?
6. What do the following scriptures say about God’s faithfulness?
Psalms 89:24; Psalms 89:33; Psalms 101:6; Psalms 119:90; Hebrews 10:23
7. Can you think of a time when God sent some form of encouragement to you that helped you to keep the faith? Perhaps something someone said, or the words of a certain song helped remind you of God’s promises.
8. When Samuel arrived home from the hospital unable to walk, Judith felt hopeless. Have you ever felt disappointed when God’s plan is different from your own? The Bible tells us that His timing is perfect. Can you see how His timing in Judith’s life was perfect?
9. Has there been a time that while you were waiting on God’s reply over a situation, you took the matter back into your own hands? What happened when you did? When we continually worry after we have prayed about something, are we taking the matter back into our own hands?
10. Andrew told his father that Judith’s faith pleased God. What does the Bible say about those who diligently seek him? Hebrews 11:6
11. How did Andrew help Judith the most? Have you ever prayed for someone and felt strengthened yourself?
12. What does the Bible say about angels in Psalm 91:11?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub
Note from Ruth: In The Promise of an Angel, Judith Fischer’s plain-life flips upside down after an encounter with an angel. Against her family, friends, and old order Amish traditions, she struggles to stand on faith—even if it means standing alone. In John 16:33 Jesus pre-warns, “In the world you will have tribulation.” He certainly did. However, He promises peace in Him because He overcame the world. While developing this story, The Promise of an Angel, the idea formed from this scripture. What if the source of tribulation was not from the world, which the Amish practice separation from, but was from God? Would Judith find peace to overcome this trial and strength to stand? God calls us all to stand. Jesus asked Peter directly, “But who do you say that I am?” My hope is that this book plants the seed of faith that when the time comes, we’re determined to stand—even if it means standing alone.Book Club Recommendations
