Discussion Questions

1. Emma bore scars from her past—both emotional and physical—which distorted her self image and made her feel ugly. Do you have emotional or physical scars or characteristics that make you feel insecure and less than you are and if so, how does God’s perception of you affect your own perception?

2. Sean was an easy-going, non-confrontational individual who chose to bury the dark secrets of his past rather than reveal or confront them. Do you think a person who does this can ever truly be happy? Have you ever done this?

3. The tragedy of Emma’s past drew her closer to God while the tragedy of Sean’s past only pushed him away. Have you or someone you know ever experienced a tragedy that brought you or them closer to God or farther away? If so, how did the experience/response to God affect your/their personality and life?

4. Emma tells her young neighbor, Casey, that it’s possible to have an intimate relationship with God where your passion for him is so strong, you can almost feel Him, touch Him, and hear Him at times. Do you believe that’s possible and if so, have you ever experienced that kind of closeness with God?

5. The abuse and rejection Charity experienced as a child compels her to cling to Mitch’s love as if it is her salvation and strength. But when Mitch rejects her, she discovers God is the only One who can provide salvation and strength. Have you ever experienced rejection that has drawn you closer to God and did it convince you that only He can be your salvation and strength?

6. Katie and Luke had opposing dreams—she wanted to go to law school and he wanted to have a family. Do you agree with the compromise they came to in allowing God to make the decision? Have you ever let go and allowed God to make the decision in your life and if so, were you pleased with the result?

7. One of the basic themes of A Heart Revealed is “honesty is the best policy.” Every character in the story is struggling with some form of honesty with people they love, whether it’s delusion, deception, secrecy, manipulation or outright stubbornness. In the various plots, how did the truth set the characters free? And can you cite an example in your own life where honesty was the best policy?

8. Emma was a woman with a great passion and love for God and yet she was in bondage to her past, which denied her and those she loved from experiencing the full blessings of God. Has there ever been or is there now anything in your past that cut you off from the full blessings of God? And if your answer is yes, how did the truth set you free?

9. Emma and Charity were polar opposites and yet the very best of friends. Why do you think they were so devoted to each other and do you think they helped each other to be a better person? Have you ever been friends with someone who made you a better person and vice versa?

10. Sean and Emma’s relationship began with friendship that ripened into romantic love slowly while Charity and Mitch experienced instantaneous attraction from the very beginning which wreaked havoc in their lives early on. Which type of romance do you think would be better and if single, which type of romance would you like to have? If married, which type of romance did you experience with your spouse and can you share the pros and cons?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

Dear Readers,

In many ways, A Heart Revealed is a departure for me—a heroine who is scarred, both inside and out and a forbidden love with minimal romantic interaction. Rather than the usual boy-meets-girl scenario, this is the story of a ten-year friendship that grows spiritually and emotionally, ripening into unconditional love where two people sacrifice themselves for the other.

Emma Malloy is a battered woman who fled Dublin to seek shelter for a heart badly bruised by an abusive husband and guilt. But when she falls in love with Sean O’Connor, a confirmed bachelor with demons of his own, fear and shame almost destroy them … until God sets them free with a heart revealed.

May Sean and Emma’s story not only “reveal” the grace and mercy of a loving God, but the healing power of the Truth … which truly does set us free.

Hugs,

Julie
