Introduction
A Long Island housewife investigates the murder of a local dentist in Isaacs's classic mystery of the dark side of suburbia
Though she can't admit it to herself, Judith Singer is bored. Each morning she kisses her husband on his way to work, and each evening she fixes him dinner. Three nights a week, they make tepid love. Life in their Long Island split-level is a ho-hum affair, but when a local dentist is murdered in his office, Judith's curiosity gets the better of her.
Judith soon learns that Dr. Fleckstein's private life wasn't as immaculate as his smile, and anyone in town might be the murderer. And when her neighbor becomes the chief suspect, Judith must find the real killer or risk losing her only friend in all of suburbia.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Susan Isaacs, including rare photos from the author's personal collection.
Discussion Questions
The novel takes place in an upper middle class community in Long Island, New York. Judith Singer is a comfortable housewife who gave up her career aspirations to become a wife and mother. Bored by her quiet community and new role as a housewife, becomes fascinated and consumed by investigation when a neighbor becomes the prime suspect in a murder case. She decides she must solve the murder; along the way, she uncovers fascinating secrets about the neighborhood. This book is a classic, must-read for anyone who has ever enjoyed an episode of Desperate Housewives, appreciates light social satire, or enjoys a fun, page-turning mystery."I can think of no other novelist—popular or highbrow— who consistently celebrates female gutsiness, brains, and sexuality. She's Jane Austen with a schmear," said National Public Radio's Fresh Air of Susan Isaacs.
“Wonderfully funny, deliciously mean.”—The New York Times
“Clever, deft… and very funny.”—Washington Post
“Wickedly subversive wit… Great fun.”—Cosmopolitan
Notes From the Author to the Bookclub
Note from author Susan Isaacs: Instead of doing laundry or polishing my nails, I went to my books. I decided to write about what I knew—being a Long Island housewife. I really want my women characters to do something out of the ordinary. They don’t have to be swashbucklers but they should be people who gain something, so by the end of the novel they are fuller people than they were. That’s what happens in life.Book Club Recommendations
