Kate Morton had two images in her mind before she started writing The Forgotten Garden. One was of a little girl sitting on her suitcase on a wharf. This image was engraved in her memory when she was told the story of her husband's family migrating to Australia. She wanted to know who the little girl was and what would happen if no one found her. The second image that came to her was that of a high-heeled woman walking on the cobbled streets of London...
