Introduction

When a fortune-teller shows bridesmaid Lauren Crow an omen of her gruesome death, she and her friends laugh it off as cheesy theatrics—until women begin disappearing in the night.

Even as the streets become more dangerous, Lauren finds herself lusting after a man who is himself dangerous—and quite possibly crazy. Mark Davidson prowls the city by night armed with crosses and holy water, in search of vampires, whose existence, he insists, is real. He is as irresistibly drawn to Lauren as she is to him, not only because she's the image of his murdered fiancée. Mark's frightening obsession with finding his lover's killer merely hides a bitter vendetta that cuts deeper than grief over a lost love.

As Lauren wrestles with desire and disbelief, sinister shadows lengthen over New Orleans, threatening her friends and foretelling a battle that may spell the end of the city's uneasy truce between the living and the undead.

Excerpt

Mark Davidson watched the couple at the bar, who seemed to be like any couple at any bar.

The man leaned toward the woman. She was pretty, in a tube top that displayed sculpted abs and a short skirt that afforded a long look at longer legs. She batted her lashes now and then, lowering her head, offering a shy, even rueful, smile to the man at her side. He was tall, and dark. Despite his apparent ease with her flirtation, there seemed to be a tenseness in him, a leashed energy that, to Mark, at least, suggested something wasn't quite right. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

From Heather:

1. What has created the total paranormal mystique with New Orleans? Was something there already, or did it all start with Ann Rice?

2. Have you ever been to a tarot reader, palm reader, or crystal ball reader? How about tea leaves? Do you believe in the power of anyone to see the future? Would you go to a "reader," if only just for fun?

3. Have you been to New Orleans. It seems people love it, or hate it. What's your opinion?

4. Why do you think--when the original legends have them as terribly creepy and horrible creatures--we have come to make some kind of a sex symbol out of the vampire?

5. There are many people out there today who call themselves vampires. They often believe that they suck spirit and energy from others, and then, there are those who drink blood. Should this just be considered another form of free expression, or are they seriously in need of medical help?

6. Is the city of New Orleans, the French Quarter in particular, in integral and necessary part of country's history, or do you see it as a den in inequity?

7. In my opinion, as Americans, each part of our country is a piece of the skin we all wear, terribly important. Do you feel we are all responsible to help out in one another's crisis situations, and is there anything we can do to be more aware and helpful to our countrymen--perhaps across a continent--when the next storm, earthquake, natural, or premeditated disaster occurs?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

A note from Heather for you:

I grew up on Hammer films and Edgar Allen Poe and simply love a good story that has touches of the paranormal. Hey, also grew up on Fright Night and every imaginable version of the vampire story. What I love about writing a vampire book--I can make up my own rules, because you can argue with me about vampires, but not about MY vampires, not if I remember to follow my own rules. I'm still trying to figure out myself how we took the grisly creature from Nosferatu and made him into a young Chris Sarandon. One of my favorite movies ever? The Lost Boys. The concept is fun and scary and it's the classic fight of good against evil. Pure fun to write, and I hope, pure fun to read!

A great example of an airplane book should be light reading. It must capture the imagination immediately and keep the readers attention for the entire trip. Blood Red by Heather Graham proved to be a thoroughly... (read more)
