Beth Hoffman believes that the heart of her book is threefold: being able to forgive others, being aware of the magic of life that occur everyday and in embracing a childlike spirit. Aside from these, she was also pulled by mother-daughter relationships, female power and the culture, architecture and history of Americans in the south.
Her novel was inspired by her aunt and her aunt's home in Danville, KY. Her aunt Mildred's home was an old Greek Revival. She remembers her Aunt Mildred's house having lush gardens and genteel lifestyle. Her aunt used a lot of antiques. Her aunt also had Scottish Terriers that were chasing one another across the rooms of the house. Beth Hoffman remembers...
