Introduction

Perspectives - the Journey Within is an insightful, inspirational photo essay based upon psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's assertion that the only freedom which cannot be taken away is the freedom to choose one's attitude. Author Karin Weber has juxtaposed photos from her worldwide travels with quotations from noted authorities as well as quotations from prison inmates. Surprisingly, the two disparate groups share common beliefs about life and its meanings and reinforce Frankl's premise. Chapter titles are intentionally provocative: You don't have to believe everything you think and Things happen FOR us, not TO us. Weber is a frequent volunteer at the University of Santa Monica's Freedom to Choose project at California's Valley State Prison for Women. She was motivated to write Perspectives as a result of her interaction with the inmates and her subsequent recognition that they understand Frankl's message better than many people who live outside prison walls. The author closes her photo essay with the hope that the book's messages will act as a catalyst and prompt others to reflect about who they are and what is important to them.
