Discussion Questions

1. Is MYOL a murder mystery and then a book about family dynamics, or the other way around?

2. How does Carlos’ addiction and fear of having a relationship with his family compare to Remy’s fear of pursuing her dream to be an artist?

3. Bonita has a tough exterior throughout most of MYOL. Why does she act this way? Is she acting from a place of confidence or fear?

4. Do you think Ronnie was working for the Feds when he first met Remy at the press conference or did he begin to work for them at a later date?

5. At what point, did Remy get the courage to take Bonita’s case?

6. Why didn’t Remy originally go to art school instead of law school?

7. What are your thoughts about Remy and Lou’s friendship? Do you have a friend you can share all your secrets with without fear of judgment?

8. Do you think a camp exists today in the Florida Everglades that is working toward environmental sustainability?

9. Do you feel is it reasonable for Maria Elena, Diana and Beatriz to fear a revolution in America as they had witnessed in Cuba?

10. Did Dorothy—Michael Sharpe’s mother—really suffer from dementia?
