Introduction

Imagine that you were the secret witness to a sadistic killing, that only the victim was aware of your hidden presence at the scene, and that you were too paralyzed with fear to answer her silent pleas for help.

That is Kasey Riteman's dilemma.

Kasey had just quit her job to escape the sexual advances of her hateful boss. Hoping to vent her anger, she drove aimlessly into the nighttime countryside, admonishing herself to begin making better choices in her life.

Her old Honda quit running, stranding her on an abandoned rural road. Seeking help, she inadvertently stumbled upon an utterly unexpected scene and became the accidental witness to the savage assassination of a national socialite. She immediately realized that if she went to the authorities with her grisly tale it would surely mean her immediate death. Yet she feels compelled to seek justice for the murdered woman.

Now a solution presents itself, an ingenious scheme so perfect it promises to solve the case while offering complete protection to Kasey. At first the plan works, but an explosion of media attention turns Kasey into a most unlikely celebrity and the murder implicates the state's most powerful politician in a career-ending scandal. More dangerously, Kasey is unaware that the detective with whom she is falling in love is not telling her everything he knows about the killing.
