Discussion Questions

From the author:

1. Several of the writers talk about Fifty Shades as being a good thing for female sexual empowerment. Do you think Fifty Shades pushes sexual empowerment for women forward, or sets it back?

2. Professor Anne Jamison makes some unconventional arguments about fanfiction and authorship in her essay. Was E.L. James within her rights, legally, to republish her fanfiction as original fiction? How about morally?

3. Dr. Hilda Hutcherson criticizes the sex in Fifty Shades as being unrealistic. Is it any more realistic than sex in the rest of pop culture? What, if anything, about the sex in Fifty Shades seemed real to you?

4. Various essayists compare Christian to Heathcliff and the Beast (as in Beauty and the), and Ana to Tess of the d'Urbervilles and of course Bella from Twilight. What literary figures would you say Christian and Ana are most like?

5. Was there any essayist you disagreed with so much that you couldn't finish his or her essay?

6. Which essayist would you most want to invite to dinner?
