Introduction

'Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through the tiny community of Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing, and generally getting into the holiday spirit.

But not everybody is feeling the joy. Little Joshua Barker is in desperate need of a holiday miracle. No, he's not on his deathbed; no, his dog hasn't run away from home. But Josh is sure that he saw Santa take a shovel to the head, and now the seven-year-old has only one prayer: Please, Santa, come back from the dead.

But hold on! There's an angel waiting in the wings. (Wings, get it?) It's none other than the Archangel Raziel come to Earth seeking a small child with a wish that needs granting. Unfortunately, our angel's not sporting the brightest halo in the bunch, and before you can say "Kris Kringle," he's botched his sacred mission and sent the residents of Pine Cove headlong into Christmas chaos, culminating in the most hilarious and horrifying holiday party the town has ever seen.

Move over, Charles Dickens -- it's Christopher Moore time.

Excerpt

Chapter One
Christmas Creeps

Christmas crept into Pine Cove like a creeping Christmas thing: dragging garland, ribbon, and sleigh bells, oozing eggnog, reeking of pine, and threatening festive doom like a cold sore under the mistletoe. ... view entire excerpt...

In Chapter One: Christmas Creeps Moore describes the coming season like a monster in a Stephen King book. Besides the obvious reference to the ending, what do you think Moore is getting at here? Have you sometimes felt this way about Christmas?
What did you think about Chapters 13 and 16? Did the interruption of the narrative bother you? Do you think there is any usefulness to these chapters?
In Chapter 22: A Perfect Lonesome Christmas Moore says "Life is messy. People generally suck." Considering this, what do you think is the moral of the story?

"This book is more about zombies than Christmas."by Crystal P. (see profile) 03/09/12

This is not your typical Christmas story. It's humorous, ridiculous, and extremely graphic. We're talking zombies killing people and eating their brains. Was definitely not my taste, but made for a lively... (read more)

Fair warning, if you are looking for a touching and heartwarming Christmas story then you might want to skip this one. However, if your book club is looking for something to read in December that is not... (read more)

Only one word needed to describe this book - barking! I am a bit of a baa humbug so it was courageous of the book club to give me the choice of our first christmas read. No Christmas Carol for us - I thought... (read more)

A good book with everything; laughter, tears, shock and horror. But zombies always make for a good discussion, especially when it concerns Christmas. Christopher Moore's books would be fun for any goup.... (read more)
