Introduction

As the nation commemorates the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of The War Between the States, ?Wish Is My Master? defines the Confederacy and Union through the letters, journals, and family lore handed down by those who lived the experience. Young men on both sides wrote about and understood the reasons they left home to fight this war.

?Wish Is My Master? presents a unique historical perspective regarding the struggles two Georgia families encountered. In the face of secession, an orphaned nephew in one family, George Yardley, falls in love with Amy Frey, a daughter in the other. Amy?s father, Alexander, supports the South?s pro-slavery and secessionist leadership using wealth he accumulated as a cotton broker. During George and Amy's engagement, a conspiracy contrived by Union loyalists threatens their future. George?s neighbor, Andrew Shelton, stands at the center of that plot.

As the story unfolds, the families face threat and peril as they come to terms with their beliefs regarding slavery, secession, and states? rights. All Amy wished for in life stands on the brink as she espouses and acts out her own abolitionist values.

Wish is My Master is a four-part series spanning the Civil War era.
