Introduction
In the burnt-out hollow, a house of dark secrets and an eerie beauty beckon.
Serena Diaz’s life is imploding. A troubled student has accused the young biology teacher of sexual misconduct, cutting off her promising career just as it was starting to blossom. But that’s just the beginning of Serena’s problems.
When a therapeutic walk in the woods leads her to a ruined house overtaken by criminals, Serena is assaulted and finds herself witness to the senseless murder of the one man who tries to help her.
Hurled into a world of false accusations and hounded by the press, Serena must confront evil itself to unravel the mysterious visions—and terrifying danger—that pursue her. But she can’t ignore the most haunting question: Why would a mysterious stranger give his life to save hers?
The answer, if she can find it, will point the way to her freedom from evil men in a lascivious trade.

CHAPTER 1THE CLOSET WHERE BECCA WAS TRAPPED HELD every nightmare she'd ever had, plus one that had never violated the borders of her imagination until now.

Sawdust from the unfinished floor stuck to Becca's sweaty palms and formed a gritty paste. Her breath was noisy and her heart was a frightened cat trying to claw its way out of her throat. If she wanted to avoid a split lip, she should follow orders: shut up, sit down, stay put. ... view entire excerpt...
Discussion Questions
1. Erin’s novels typically revolve around life’s “thin places,” metaphorical events that expose the intersection between the natural and supernatural worlds. Stranger Things is the first of her novels to present a thin place as a physical location. Not everyone who visits the Station Fire house has the same experience of it. Compare Serena’s, Christopher’s, Phil’s, and Kaleo’s impressions of the ruins. What might account for their different perceptions and receptivity to spiritual realities?2. Have you ever been in a place where you felt like you could “see,” physically or spiritually, a greater reality than your present circumstances? Describe that experience. Why do you think it happened to you?
3. This story doesn’t belong to just one or two characters, but to a large cast of players. What might this say about the story’s positive outcome? How is this different from stories in which an independent hero saves the day? Does Stranger Things have a hero? If so, who is it?
