Excerpt
Chapter OneA grieving woman, I’ve decided, is like a crème brûlée: she begins in a liquid state, endures a period of searing heat, and eventually develops a scab-like crust.
By the time we sell the house I am pretty much crusted over, so I’m honestly surprised when the real estate agent slides a check toward me and tears blur my vision.
Ms. Nichols doesn’t seem to notice my streaming eyes. “That’s a tidy little profit, even if it is only half the proceeds,” she says, eyeing the bank draft as if she can’t bear to let it slip away. “If you’re in the market for another property—” ... view entire excerpt...

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub
Dear Book Clubbers: On my forty-fifth birthday, I realized I was halfway to ninety . . . and The End. So I told my agent that I wanted to write a series about a funeral home. It wouldn’t be gloomy or macabre, but about life and death and everything that happens in between. Believe it or not, she was thrilled. In Doesn’t She Look Natural?, Jennifer Graham, the no-nonsense chief of staff for a Virginia Senator, finds herself an unemployed single mom. Forced to live with her mother until she can find work that does not involve her gregarious ex-husband, her efforts are stymied until she learns that she has inherited a funeral home in picturesque Mt. Dora. Jennifer journeys to the Florida town with her two sons, never dreaming that within a mortuary she will uncover mysteries of love and life. The sequel, She Always Wore Red, is finished, and I’m now writing the third book, She’s in a Better Place. By juxtaposing a mother who’s dealing with more life than she can handle with people are facing death, I think I’ve been able to explore a few areas that truly matter. I hope you’ll join us on the journey! Eternally grateful, Angela HuntBook Club Recommendations
