Introduction

Tom Langdon, a weary and cash-strapped journalist, is banned from flying when a particularly thorough airport security search causes him to lose his cool. Now, he must take the train if he has any chance of arriving in Los Angeles in time for Christmas with his girlfriend. To finance the trip, he sells a story about a train ride taken during the Christmas season. Thereupon begins one of the most hilarious-and heartwarming-journeys ever told. Along the way, Tom encounters a ridiculous cast of characters, unexpected romance, and an avalanche that changes everyone's Christmas plans. As the mighty Southwest Chief chugs along, Tom learns what really makes the holiday special in a remarkable novel that will charm all who read it. David Baldacci's most recent novel, Last Man Standing, has more than 650,000 copies in print and hit #3 on the New York Times bestseller list. It will be published in mass market in 9/02 and will contain a teaser chapter from The Christmas Train. There are over 30 million copies of David Baldacci's novels in print worldwide. His books are published in 30 languages in more than 80 countries.

Our group leader set up her son's H. O. train set, we had Christmas decorations too. For food there were Santa Hat brownies (brownie bites with strawberries on whipped cream) very cute.Sparkling grape juice and cupcakes were served.

  "Great Storyteller"by Linda E. (see profile) 01/11/12

An interesting cast of well developed characters, with intrigueing twists in the story line. There was mystery, romance, deception all interwoven. Mr. Baldacci is quite a story teller who writes in such... (read more)

  "A Waste of Time"by Cindy P. (see profile) 12/22/11

This book was trite and predictable. The sentences were poorly composed and the plot and characters were dull. Aside from the references to the wonderful book Roughing It by Mark Twain, the book was... (read more)

"The Christmas Train"by Maryann G. (see profile) 12/15/11

This was a pleasant enough book and not a bad choice for a December meeting. The ending did seem a bit contrived. But if you want an easy, pleasant read for the holidays this will fit the bill.

  "Christmas Train"by Suzette L. (see profile) 12/16/09

Nicely written, funny, good book -- but did not cause deep discussion from the group. It was a nice book to read during a busy time of the year.

"Letter from Home"by Suzette L. (see profile) 12/11/09

Great unconventional mytery. The setting is in the 1940's and the mystery, through the eyes of a young girl, unfolds wonderfully and keeps you guessing till the end.

"Needs more excitement!"by Ruth A. (see profile) 12/09/08

Our book club on the whole liked the book. However, it wasn't nearly one of our favorites. The story line was good and the story on a train was intriguing. However, we felt the book didn't keep our... (read more)

This book was recommended for me by a friend, so much for that idea. This was one of the biggest waste of my time ever. I could not believe such a noted best selling author could even justify writing this... (read more)
