Introduction

A woman steps over the line into the unthinkable in this brilliant, powerful, and unforgettable new novel by the author of The Lovely Bones and Lucky.

For years Helen Knightly has given her life to others: to her haunted mother, to her enigmatic father, to her husband and now grown children. When she finally crosses a terrible boundary, her life comes rushing in at her in a way she never could have imagined. Unfolding over the next twenty-four hours, this searing, fast-paced novel explores the complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, the meaning of devotion, and the line between love and hate. It is a challenging, moving, gripping story, written with the fluidity and strength of voice that only Alice Sebold can bring to the page.

I personally did not enjoy this book but after discussion I have more respect for the work. I would recommend this book for discussion but I would not recommend this book as a solo read.

I keep waiting for another "Lovely Bones" from Sebold, and unfortunately, this is not it.

I finished the book, so it was not a total waste, but I would not read it again, and I will hes

"I think it discuss an edge that no one ever wants to explore, she has done the unthinkable"by Courtney K. (see profile) 01/14/08

It was difficult to read because the subject matter is unthinkable yet, you question.

This book was absolutely excruciating to get through, painful to read. The characters were unlikeable. Very depressing, with no redeeming qualities. The Lovely Bones was interesting and kept you reading.... (read more)
