Tamara leaned in closer. “Since when have you ever known me to send out mixed signals? I have never led a man on in my life, and never knocked a half decent one back either.”

“Yeah, you’re right—you’re not that type of chic.”

Tamara leaned back in her seat. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Lexie thought for a while. “Maybe you need to drop a few subtle hints. He may be gorgeous as you say, but he could also be as thick as a brick. You never know. A guy can’t be blessed with all the good things in life; he’s got to have some flaws.”

“No. This guy is perfect.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Tam, no guy is perfect. They’re all defective in some way. You just need to decide if you’re willing to put up with those defects and, more importantly, for how long.”

The man in the suit coughed Lexie knew he was listening when she looked his way and saw his wide grin. He was shaking his head. She didn’t let on to Tamara that their conversation was being overheard by a third person. Her friend seemed more interested in her coffee and cake that the waitress had just delivered to their table, than any mortal male in the room.

Tamara picked up her dessert spoon and scooped up a mouthful of cake. “Huh. You’re probably right, but we can keep dreaming can’t we?” She smiled. “Hey, speaking of dreaming, how’s your dream boy going? Seen him lately?”

“Every night, actually. He’s always there. His visits are getting longer but he still disappears when I touch him.”

Tamara swallowed the mouthful of cake then giggled. “So he keeps going off with a bang every night.”

Lexie smiled. She knew her friend was teasing her. “Yes. A very loud and sudden bang, like when someone hits the end of a whip onto a hard but hollow surface.” She acted out the whipping motion with an invisible whip. “It’s very frustrating.”

Tamara leaned in and spoke in a low voice across the table so none of the other patrons could hear. “Please don’t tell me that you’re into this guy because it’s not healthy. He’s not real. You do know that, don’t you?” view abbreviated excerpt only...
