Introduction

Secretly raised as a boy in her father's caravan and schooled in languages and the fine art of negotiation, Adira rejects the looming changes of womanhood that threaten her nomadic life and independence. With the arrival of two mysterious Northmen, rumored to be holy men, Adira's world unravels. She loses everything she values most, including the "Angel" who has awakened her desires. Caught between her culture and freedom, and tormented by impossible love, she abandons all she has known in a dangerous quest to follow the "Angels." With only her beloved dog, Nami, at her side, Adira must use all the skills she learned from her father to survive the perils of the desert, Sodom, and her own heart.
Angels at the Gate is a story of adventure and the power of love, a compelling saga based on historical research about the ancient biblical world of Abraham, Sodom and Gomorrah, and the woman who "became a pillar of salt."

Discussion Questions

1. What is the importance of “Asking the right question”? How did it change the way Adira saw the world and the choices she made?
2. How did Adira’s childhood posing as a boy influence the way she saw the world and herself?
3. The desert is a crucible. How did Adira’s experience in the desert change her?
4. Discuss how “angels at the gate” is used as a metaphor for change.
5. The forces of duty, love, and freedom. What were they? How did they create conflict in her and how did she reconcile them?
6. Do we face the same conflicts today? How do different societies’ values influence decisions?
7. How did understanding the cultural religious roots of the Canaanites affect your perception of Sodom & Gomorrah?
8. How does the author’s vision of Adira “turning into a pillar of salt” differ from or coincide with the traditional interpretations?

T. K. Thorne's _Noah's Wife_ is another wonderful book about a strong, resourceful woman living in ancient biblical times - dangerous times for anyone and especially for a woman. These are both "must reads" for fans of historical fiction!
Make sure you read the author\'s notes.

It takes place in 1738 BCE so it is Biblical in theme. My book club members all gave it a thumbs up. Well written and the context of the story was beautiful. We think this should be read by all book... (read more)

T.K. Thorne's new novel _Angels at the Gate_ is bold and insightful historical fiction. Don't expect the simple recounting of a bible story here. Yes, Lot's wife (Adira/Adir) is the central character,... (read more)

Full disclosure, I am T.K. Thorne's sister, but even if I wasn't I would still be her number one fan. I was worried about this novel--how could she possibly write another historical biblical fiction that... (read more)

Set in Biblical times, and reminiscent of The Red Tent, this is a well-written, informative, and interesting account of the time of Abraham and Lot.
