Introduction

She is perhaps the most recognized of all Mormon pioneer women: Eliza R. Snow. We hear her name often as an example of faith and strength, and we have sung her beloved hymns. We admire her as a remarkable poet and leader. Her list of credentials and accomplishments is long. But like with many who have become legends, we know less about the details of her "variegated life," as she describes it-the personal joys and sorrow brought about by the changing scenes and rapidly unfolding events of which she was a part. This intimate look at Eliza seeks to reveal a more private side of this extraordinary woman who was a plural wife of two prophets and the sister of another. Interspersed with photographs, artifacts, and poetry, this inspiring biography gives us a unique glimpse into the fascinating life story of Eliza R. Snow. Karen Lynn Davidson and Jill Mulvay Derr are coeditors of The Complete Poetry of Eliza R. Snow. Karen is a volume editor for the Joseph Smith Papers Project. She has taught at BYU, served on the General Music Committee of the Church, and plays violin with the Orchestra at Temple Square. Jill has been an associate professor of Church history and research historian for the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History at BYU. A former president of the Mormon History Association, she is the author or coauthor of many books and articles dealing with Mormon women's history.
