My husband is not a good man. He has never been a good man. The day I met him, I knew he was evil personified. I won’t make excuses for his behavior, because I’ve never been one to coddle any person in their wrong doing. I never asked my husband what his job description was. I didn’t feel it was any of my business. I did know that by day, we ran a very popular deli. Everybody who was anybody—and even the nobodies—dined with us. On the outside, we were the normal, but young, Bill and Clair Huxtable.

My husband was down on his knees, bloodied, battered, and beaten to the point he could barely hold himself up. He’d always been a warrior, my warrior. They would kill him, I knew that. I felt it with everything within me. My husband was going to die and it was all my fault.
