CHAPTER ONE

"The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no lack of gain."

Amsterdam, 1937

The sound of popping glass muffled by a cloth napkin was subdued compared to the joyous shouts of "Mazel Tov!" that immediately followed. Forty-two year old Jan Rijnfeld lifted the veil to find Sofie's smiling lips awaiting his kiss. He gave her a perfunctory peck, slightly embarrassed under the watchful eyes of the guests, then placed her hand in the crook of his arm and whisked her away from beneath the chuppah.
