Introduction
Dancing in the Dark: Explorations of Latin American Lunacy is Blair Bourassa's second volume of the "Roadwork" series, an investigative travelogue discussing the author’s odyssey through Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Cuba. Physically resembling a Latino and fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese, he was able to integrate himself easily into communities from the richest circles of the Brazilian elite to the poorest of Cuban farmers. Join the writer as he participates in exotic festivals deep in the Amazon jungle, lives for months in the slums of Colombia, visits secret Venezuelan black magic cults, witnesses murders and riots in Central America, and rides a bicycle the entire length of Cuba. The style alternates between humorous, awestruck and informative, while also lacing the narrative with numerous illustrative photos , maps and digressions. Several appendices are also included at the end of the book, discussing Latin America sexuality, body, language politics, history and economics.
