Leaving Time: A Novel by Jodi Picoult | Summary & Analysis
This is a Summary & Analysis. Jodi Picoult’s New York bestseller novel follows Jenna Metcalf as she seeks out her long-missing mother, the elephant researcher and activist Alice. Along the way, she is aided by former police detective Virgil Stanhope and lapsed psychic Serenity Jones; she and they go between New Hampshire and Tennessee to find Alice. Along the way, Virgil finds the closure he has long sought, Serenity returns to her full power as a medium and Alice and Jenna learn the truth about their relationship. The text explores a number of issues, including animal consciousness and paranormal phenomena, as well as presenting an utterly human search for family, belonging and a place in the world.
The action of the plot occurs primarily in Boone, New Hampshire, a fictional town with enough open country around it to offer an elephant sanctuary and enough urbanity to have a slum. Other notable locations in the text include Hohenwald, Tennessee, which also boasts an elephant sanctuary, and the plains of South Africa, where elephants roam freely. The settings emphasize openness and a lack of boundary. It is a compelling read and would also serve well to underpin sustained and detailed academic study as so few popular works can.
