Introduction
On Saturday, September 21, 2013, I had just hit the send button on my computer that would alert more than 3,000 of my contacts that I was fundraising for a humanitarian project in Kenya, called DANCE FOR PEACE. The goal was to teach tango to disadvantaged youth, ever at-risk for many social ills in Nairobi and then have them go on to teach tango as a means of income. A tango friend, Mungai Waweru, and I would go to Kenya to train the youth as soon as we had raised enough money to cover the expenses of the pilot project. Our partners in Kenya were the nonprofit group, Peace at Heart Initiatives Network (PHIN). Within minutes of my hitting the send button my phone rang. It was my sister Donna in New York informing me that Somali terrorists had bombed the Westgate Mall in Nairobi. Some 67 people died and more than 175 were wounded. Donna and I had visited that mall in 2011. The Islamist group al-Shaabab claimed responsibility. I wondered what al-Shaabab thought of the tango. I wondered if I should have hit the send button at all. Too late for that. Five months later, having raised enough money to get started I was on my way to Kenya. So was Mungai.
