Introduction

Annie Cochrane is 44 and divorced, with a 16-year-old son of 16, when she discovers she is pregnant. There are two candidates for father—an ex-boyfriend called Tariq and the widowed leader of the Scottish Parliament called Andrew. At the same time Annie's elderly mother is becoming confused and needs care—she finds herself in the situation of having to look after a new baby and an ailing parent, on top of this the press (she's a health minister) become obsessed with finding out the identity of the father.
