Introduction

She’s found the love of her life. Unfortunately, he loves her sister. As World War I rages across the Atlantic, a smaller war is brewing in Boston. Despite her father’s warnings, Faith O’Connor has fallen for the foolhardy Collin McGuire even though he is secretly courting her younger sister. What will happen when Faith’s affections are revealed? Who will Collin choose? One thing is true: Faith may know her spirit, and Collin may desire her heart, but it is her sister who wields the power to betray them all. Book 1 of the Daughters of Boston series, A Passion Most Pure will carry your heart from the streets of Boston to the hills of Ireland as men go off to war and women long for their return. Full of passion, romance, rivalry, and betrayal, it will captivate you from the very first page.

Excerpt

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, LATE SUMMER, 1916

Sisters are overrated, she decided. Not all of them, of course, only the beautiful ones who never let you forget it. Faith O’Connor stood on tiptoe behind the side porch, squinting through her mother’s prized lilac bush. The sound of summer locusts vibrated in her ears as she gasped, inches from where her sister, Charity, stood in the arms of— ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

1. Faith O’Connor is determined not to let a man distract her from the goals she has in life. Do you think she has her priorities straight? Why or why not?

2. Knowing what you know about Faith and Collin’s families and backgrounds, do you think they would make a good match? Why or why not?

3. Collin obviously has difficulty deciding between the sisters, even early on in the story. Which sister do you think he is best suited for? Which will make him happiest?

4. Faith’s father tries to protect his daughters from Collin’s brash and disrespectful ways, as well as his poor reputation. Is Mr. O’Connor’s concern well-founded? Do you think he should protect his daughters or let them make their own decisions?

5. Eventually it is clear that Collin and Faith have strong feelings for one another. What do you think of Collin’s continued advances toward Faith while he is courting Charity? How would you react if you were Faith? If you were Charity?

6. As is sometimes the case, world events take the men in the O’Connor family, as well as Collin, away from the women in their lives. Has this ever happened to you? How did you cope?

7. While she is in Ireland visiting family, Faith develops a relationship with another man. Do you think this older, wiser man is a better choice than Collin? Why or why not?

8. Mrs. O’Connor and her girls suffer the devastating loss of a husband and father and must decide how to proceed without him. Have you ever lost someone important to you? How did you recover and what helped you begin to live again?

9. Faith is finally faced with a choice. How will her choice affect her life? Her sister’s life? The lives of the men between whom she must choose?

10. As this story shows, there are many twists and turns in love, and much of the time, love hurts more than it is pleasurable. How important is love to you?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

Dear Friend,

At the tender age of twelve, Gone With the Wind swept me away … and my writing career took flight! I penned 150 pages of what would become (almost 40 years later!) my debut novel, A Passion Most Pure. Back then, my motivation was romance. And let me tell you, there is nothing more passionate or fulfilling than seeing this book realized!

I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Let me know what you think by dropping me a line at www.julielessman.com. From my heart—and hearts of my characters—I wish you the best!
