Introduction

When one Coast Guard officer is found dead and another goes missing, Coast Guard Investigative Service special agent Finn Walker faces his most dangerous crime yet. His only clues are what little evidence remains aboard the dead officer's boat, and the direction the clues point to will test Finn and the Guard to their limits.

When investigative reporter--and Finn's boss's sister--Gabby Rowley arrives, her unrelenting questions complicate an already volatile situation. Now that she's back, the tug on Finn's heart is strong, but with the risks she's taking for her next big story, he fears she might not live through it.

Thrown together by the heinous crime, Finn and Gabby can't ignore the sparks or judgments flying between them. But will they be able to see past their preconceptions long enough to track down an elusive killer, or will they become his next mark?

Discussion Questions

1. Both Finn and Gabby have careers that regularly put them in danger. Which of their roles would be most high-stress for you? What did you find interesting about their line of work?

2. Dani’s books often have interesting side characters whose stories will be explored in future books in the series. Did you have a favorite secondary character?

3. Finn and Gabby had to deliver difficult news to the wife of one of the victims. Do you think they handled it well? What do you find is the best way to show care to those who are grieving?

4. “Gabby thought she’d been astute at reading situations and, more importantly, people, but she’d completely dropped the ball with Asim. Somehow she’d missed the red flags.” What do you think caused Gabby to make such a serious error in judgment in her past by trusting someone who later betrayed her? How do you see that choice affecting her actions in the present?

5. What did you think of Gabby and Finn’s second-chance love story? What do you think makes the two of them good for each other?

6. As the characters investigate the mysterious death on the dive, some of the details from the suspects’ questioning don’t line up. Do you think you would enjoy conducting interviews like these?

7. Several times, Gabby broke rules, tricked her friends, and endangered herself to continue the investigation. Why do you think she did this? Do you find her dedication admirable or foolish?

8. Can you identify with Finn’s tendency to dwell on and blame himself for past mistakes? What do you think helped him most as he confronted his fear of failure?

9. At what point in the ending of the story were you most fearful for Gabby or Finn?
