Introduction

Glenna Girard has passed through the agony of an unimaginable loss. It is only in planning her escape from her marriage and her current circumstances, that she manages to start moving again. As she takes tentative steps into the new life she is so carefully shaping, she encounters a man facing a potential tragedy as profound and devastating as her own. It’s a tragedy Glenna can prevent, but only if she’s willing to risk the peace she’s struggled so hard to achieve.

Chapter One

The day Glenna left Cincinnati, it was cold.
Cold.
Hot.
Odd how difficult it was to recall clearly the heavy, suffocating pall of the one while experiencing the hard–edged, icy burn of the other.
The morning she’d chosen for her departure was a day Mark was scheduled to be in the operating room early. It meant he was up and out of the condo well before dawn, already focused, no doubt, on the specifics of that day’s procedure. He didn’t expect her to get up with him, but perhaps he would have forced the issue had he known that most days she didn’t manage to get out of bed until right before he was due home. ... view entire excerpt...

Discussion Questions

From the author:

What did you think of Glenna’s encounter with ordinary Ella Fitzgerald on the bus?

Was it a good way to show why Glenna was running away?

Once you learn what Glenna did, do you believe she will be able to recover? Are you sympathetic toward her?

The novel celebrates the resilience of the human heart. Glenna isn’t the only one who shows resilience. How do Lila, Jack, and Mintha show they are resilient?

Is a need for such resilience something you have experienced in your life?

Memory Lessons is also about friendship. What role do Glenna’s friendships with Lila and Jack play? Her eventual friendship with Mintha? Would Glenna have healed without those friendships? Have you had any similar experiences with friendship?

Which story, scene, or motif (e.g. Glenna’s return to medicine, Lila’s book signing, Mintha’s trial, Ben’s inability to speak, Glenna’s knowledge and experience being what saves Mintha) resonated with you the most? Do you know why?

What did you find most surprising about this story?

Who was your favorite character?

Was the ending satisfying?
