Introduction
John Buchan's classic thriller, set in England prior to World War I, following the exciting tale of Richard Hannay. Hannay, a Scot who returns to London from a mining career in South Africa, becomes embroiled in his neighbor's belief that foreign powers are plotting against the United Kingdom. Falsely accused of his neighbor's subsequent murder, Hannay flees from the law. Bucans tale of murder and fugitive intrigue influenced generations of authors and filmmakers. The book served as the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1935 film "The 39 Steps". Buchan himself later rose to become the Governor General of Canada.
