Introduction
Alternating between past and present, Schami draws a colorful portrait about coexistence between Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the busy streets of Damascus, capturing the colors, smells, and flavors of the city, and evoking the legendary Syrian hospitality. All of this does not, however, blind the reader to the brutality of the system, and Schami describes a country torn by corruption, violence, and religious fanaticism, while also denouncing the patriarchal authority in the family core and individual submission under the pressure of the clan.
